Welcome to the

Asylum Medicine Training Initiative

The Asylum Medicine Training Initiative (AMTI) is proud to present its online course created by a national collaboration of experts and featuring peer-reviewed best practices in asylum medicine.

The course is free for health, human rights, and legal professionals. The content is based on the updated Istanbul Protocol 2022 and is suitable for clinicians at all levels of training.

After completing the first five mandatory modules of this course, participants will be qualified to conduct forensic medical evaluations with prominent asylum medicine organizations, including Physicians for Human Rights.

Learn about our curriculum.

Watch this short video from Drs. Eleanor Emery and Triveni DeFries to learn about the Asylum Medicine Training Initiative (AMTI) and the topics covered in this course.

Complete the core modules.

The first five modules (Modules 1-5) are required to complete the Introductory Curriculum. We estimate this will take 5-7 hours. Each module has an associated quiz directly below the video; to receive a certificate of completion for that module, complete the quiz following review of the module.

Apply for continuing education (CE) credits for modules 1-5.

To earn CE credits for modules 1-5, visit the NYC Health + Hospital page and select an AMTI module from the listing of enduring materials. You will be prompted to create or use your Non-NYC Health + Hospitals User login. Once logged in, click to access the module content and the link to the evaluation you need to complete to receive credit for that module will appear. Please note that modules 1-5 are designated for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ each. Disciplines eligible to receive credits are physicians (MD/DO), licensed psychologists, social workers, PAs, NPs, and midwives. You do not have to be licensed in NY to apply for credit.

Complete the focused modules.

The next six optional modules (Modules 6 through 11) are highly recommended but are not required to receive the certificate of completion for the Introductory Curriculum. Each one takes up to 1 hour; to receive a certificate of completion for that module, complete the quiz following review of the module.
