About AMTI

The Asylum Medicine Training Initiative was founded in 2021 to train healthcare professionals to meet the need for forensic medical evaluations of people seeking asylum in the U.S.

For many years, experts in asylum medicine have been training clinicians in our different parts of the country to put their medical skills into practices conducting forensic medical evaluations. However, we recognized the need to standardize and improve our trainings and to make them more accessible by providing free, peer-reviewed content that you can review on your own time from your own location.

This Introductory Curriculum is the product of our interdisciplinary collaboration involving 80 contributors with expertise in asylum medicine and human rights law from over 40 organizations and academic centers across the U.S. The content of this curriculum is based on the updated Istanbul Protocol 2022 and is peer-reviewed to represent best practices and diverse perspectives in the field.

Our Mission:

AMTI’s mission is to define and disseminate best practices in the clinical evaluation of survivors of persecution seeking humanitarian protection.

Our Goals:

To evaluate and improve the effectiveness and impact of AMTI.

To develop more engaging, peer-reviewed learning resources into prioritized areas of focus within asylum medicine.

To cultivate an active, sustainable, and diverse learning community in asylum medicine.
